Fat Talk

This made me cry,...

  1. My computer is playing up and won't play the sound. I get the gist of the ad though, I think. What are they saying?

  2. Okay, we've fixed the sound. I watched the commercial. All I was thinking while watching was that some of those girls do look kind of fat. I guess the message was lost on me. It didn't make me cry, it made me think, 'Well, wake up and do something about it, then.' I don't think a little honesty with yourself hurts, if you then deal with it. 'I have a muffin top' or 'I have cellulite' are just factual statements. 'I have a muffin top and therefore I am a horrible person who deserves to be locked up a darkened room,' now that would be self-hate speech. I guess it all depends on the sub-text.

    1. I disagree. I think most of us are acutely aware of our flaws and imperfections and the constant running dialogue in our head about those flaws is damaging, not a helpful reality check. I know this is the case for me. Those girls all looked beautiful to me.

    2. They are all very pretty and I'm sure they are lovely human beings.

  3. This made me sad, too, Siddaleah, as the subtext is definitely there in so many of those comments. Just look at the hashtags: #cow #fatty "gross". It's a good reminder to talk positive to ourselves - so much more helpful to say "I can change", "I am sexy", "I am a worthwhile person", "I am loved" :)

    1. Oh well, I don't even know what hashtags are and paid no attention to them. Probably the healthiest thing we can do is stop with all the sentences starting with 'I', take the focus off ourselves for a change.

  4. Yes...I am all for reprogramming all the negative self talk and judgement. We have to approach things from a loving and healthy perspective, and the knowledge that we are our best caretakers.
